When Delhi Capitals decided to part ways with Ricky Ponting as their head coach, it stunned not only the franchise’s supporters but also its players. Recently, Parth Jindal, the co-owner and chairman of the team, has shed light on the reasons behind this significant decision.
Just days ago, Delhi Capitals made public through their social media channels that they were ending their association with Ricky Ponting. Ponting had held the position of head coach for seven years, during which the team did not manage to secure an Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy.
Initially, speculation pointed towards the team’s inability to clinch the IPL trophy as the primary cause for Ponting’s departure. However, Parth Jindal has now disclosed the true rationale behind this pivotal move.
Parth Jindal speaks out on Ricky Ponting’s removal as Delhi Capitals head coach.
Parth Jindal, also known for his association with the esteemed JSW group, which sponsors India’s contingent at the upcoming Olympic Games 2026, recently discussed various topics including the dismissal of Ricky Ponting as head coach of Delhi Capitals and the franchise’s strategic direction in a conversation with CNBC-TV18 ahead of the Olympics.
During the interview, Jindal expressed strong faith in the core group of Delhi Capitals, highlighting key Indian talents such as Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mukesh Kumar.
“There is going to be a meet where we actually give our views to the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) on the retention and release rules for the mega-auction. We have a great core of players at the Delhi Capitals. If you look at the likes of Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Tristan Stubbs, Mukesh Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed, there is a very good core that we have,” Jindal stated.
When queried about the decision to remove Ricky Ponting from the head coach position, Jindal emphasized the essential requirement for the coach to be present in India whenever needed. He cited this as the sole reason behind the franchise’s choice to part ways with Ponting.
“The coaching set-up that one needs to have, has to be full-time. They have to be available in the country, in the city at any given point in time. That is the sole reason why we have made this change,” Jindal added.
The franchise extended their gratitude to Ricky Ponting for his invaluable contributions over the past seven years and wished him success in his future endeavors. Delhi Capitals shared a poignant message for the Australian cricket legend, reminiscing about his memorable speeches in the team’s dressing room.
Under Ponting’s coaching, Delhi Capitals experienced their most successful season in IPL 2020, culminating in a memorable journey to the tournament final. Despite their efforts, they were defeated by Mumbai Indians in the title clash.
