Following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024, significant changes are anticipated in the team’s management structure. Despite ending their campaign with a victory over Ireland, Pakistan failed to advance to the Super Eight stage.
This marked the first instance in the tournament’s history that Pakistan was eliminated in the group stage. Their journey included a surprising Super Over loss to the USA followed by a narrow defeat to arch-rivals India by 6 runs. Despite subsequent wins against Canada and Ireland, these were insufficient to secure their progression in the tournament.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly planning significant changes following the disappointing performance of the team in the T20 World Cup 2024. It is rumored that the entire selection committee, which includes Wahab Riaz, could be dismissed.
Following Pakistan’s disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2024, questions have arisen regarding Babar Azam’s leadership. There’s speculation that Mohammad Rizwan might replace him as the captain for white-ball cricket, although a final decision has yet to be made. This isn’t the first time Azam’s captaincy has been scrutinized; previously, he stepped down after Pakistan’s early exit from the ODI World Cup 2023.
Under PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, Azam returned to captaincy, but Pakistan’s failure to advance to the Super Eight stage in the T20 World Cup 2024 has put his position in jeopardy again. Meanwhile, Shan Masood will continue to lead the Test team.
Additionally, the PCB is considering revising the criteria for central contracts to prioritize performance over reputation. This could result in established players being demoted if their performances don’t meet expectations, while promising youngsters could be promoted based on their on-field achievements.
Despite Pakistan’s elimination, India and the USA advanced to the Super Eight stage from Group A in the T20 World Cup 2024, with India topping the group and the USA finishing second.
