Afghanistan’s streets burst into joyous celebrations following their thrilling eight-run win over Bangladesh in a rain-affected match, securing their historic first-ever T20 World Cup semi-final spot at Arnos Vale Stadium in St Vincent on Tuesday.
βItβs unbelievable, I donβt have any words to describe my feelings. Back home, everyone is so happy for this big achievement,β said Rashid Khan after the historic win.
βItβs a massive celebration back home now. Itβs a big achievement for us,β the Afghan went onto add.
Despite defending a modest score of 115 runs from five wickets on a challenging pitch for bowlers, Afghan captain Rashid Khan overcame rain interruptions, a wet ball, and a revised target of 114 runs in 19 overs. He claimed four wickets for 23 runs, dismissing Bangladesh for 105 runs in 17.5 overs. Bangladesh, hoping for a win to secure Australia’s semi-final spot on net run-rate, were led by Litton Das’s unbeaten 54 runs.
However, pacer Naveen ul Haq’s consecutive dismissals of Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman in the penultimate over sparked exuberant celebrations among the Afghan team. Earlier in the day, India’s victory over Australia meant Afghanistan secured the second spot in the group, knocking out both Australia and Bangladesh from semi-final contention.
Afghanistan’s next challenge is a semi-final clash against South Africa in Trinidad on Wednesday, while India will face England in the other semi-final in Guyana on Thursday.
