The Indian cricket team is set to rendezvous with Prime Minister Narendra Modi upon their return from the West Indies, where they clinched the 2024 T20 World Cup title in a thrilling final against South Africa. BCCI officials are organizing the meeting, with nearly all players expected to attend, barring Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shivam Dube, who may be unavailable due to commitments in the T20I series against Zimbabwe.
Following the victory, PM Modi personally congratulated captain Rohit Sharma, senior batsman Virat Kohli, and coach Rahul Dravid over the phone. On the social media platform X, PM Modi praised the team extensively and conveyed special messages to Rohit, Virat, and departing coach Dravid.
“Dear @ImRo45, You are excellence personified. Your aggressive mindset, batting and captaincy have given a new dimension to the Indian team. Your T20 career will be remembered fondly. Delighted to have spoken to you earlier today,” wrote the PM.
On Kohli, who announced retirement from the format after the title win, PM Modi said the format “will miss you”.
“Dear @imVkohli, Glad to have spoken to you. Like the innings in the Finals, you have anchored Indian batting splendidly. You’ve shone in all forms of the game. T20 Cricket will miss you but I am confident you’ll continue to motivate the new generation of players,” added the PM.
“Dear @imjadeja, You have performed exceptionally as an all-rounder. Cricket lovers admire your stylish stroke play, spin and superb fielding. Thank you for the enthralling T20 performances over the years. My best wishes for your endeavours ahead,” wrote the PM.
