Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan reflected on Glenn Maxwell’s extraordinary innings during the 2023 ODI World Cup match at Wankhede Stadium. Rashid Khan admitted that Maxwell’s performance still haunts him, describing it as an “unbelievable knock”.
Maxwell’s innings came when Australia was struggling at 91-7 in pursuit of a 292-run target. He went on to score an unbeaten 201 runs off just 128 balls, smashing 21 fours and 10 sixes. Maxwell’s achievement made him the first player to score a double century in ODIs while chasing a target.
Despite Maxwell’s heroics, Afghanistan failed to progress to the semi-finals of the World Cup, finishing sixth in the 10-team points table. Meanwhile, Australia advanced to the semi-finals and eventually clinched the trophy at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Rashid Khan says Do Think About That GameĀ
In a recent interview with the International Cricket Council (ICC), Rashid Khan revealed that memories of Glenn Maxwell’s extraordinary innings against Afghanistan occasionally trouble him at night. Rashid described Maxwell’s performance as one of the finest innings he had witnessed.
“At night, whenever I’m going to sleep, sometimes I do think about that game. It just comes in the mind. Sometimes when I think about that game, my body just changes. That was an unbelievable knock, one of the best innings we have ever seen,” Rashid said.
The 35-year-old Australian all-rounder also had some fortune go his way during his innings. He escaped being given out LBW after the decision was overturned upon review against Noor Ahmad, and was also dropped by Mujeeb-ur-Rahman at short fine leg. These missed opportunities proved to be costly for Afghanistan in the ODI World Cup 2023 match.
Glenn Maxwell said I’s Been A Little Bit TentativeĀ
Glenn Maxwell conceded that he has yet to produce his top performance in the T20 World Cup 2024. He admitted to focusing too much on pushing for singles instead of capitalizing on his strengths, emphasizing the need to refocus on his natural game.
“Over the last few games, I’ve been a little bit tentative … trying to poke way into a gap and get a one. (But) I’ve got to play the strengths that I have a bit more often. Sometimes your mind can start to play a few tricks on you … you start to look at previous scores. But at this stage of the tournament, I’ve just gone back to what I do really well. And hopefully that holds me in good stead.”
Maxwell arrived at the 2024 T20 World Cup following a challenging IPL season with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He managed 53 runs across 5 matches at an average of 17.67 and a strike rate of 132.50, with his highest score being 28. Additionally, Maxwell made an impact with the ball, securing three wickets at an economy rate of 8.42.
