India and South Africa will face off in the highly-anticipated final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The match is set for Saturday (June 29) at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.
South Africa secured their spot in the final by defeating Afghanistan in the first semifinal with a commanding 9-wicket victory. This marked their first-ever entry into the final of a World Cup across any format. The Proteas’ bowlers dominated, restricting Afghanistan to just 56 runs and then chasing down the target in under 9 overs, losing only one wicket. They aim to clinch their maiden World Cup title.
India, on the other hand, advanced to the final by defeating defending champions England by 68 runs in the second semifinal. After being asked to bat first on a challenging pitch, India recovered to post 171/7, thanks in part to a resilient fifty from captain Rohit Sharma. In response, England faltered, getting bowled out for 103 runs with Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav each taking 3 wickets.
India last won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and are eager to lift the trophy again. They have not claimed an ICC trophy since 2013 and are determined to end their drought. Both India and South Africa enter the final unbeaten, having not lost a single match in the tournament so far. South Africa won all their group stage matches and then defeated West Indies, England, and the USA in the Super 8s. India won three group matches and had one game abandoned, before overcoming Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Australia in the Super 8s.
