In the Eliminator match of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2024, veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin displayed a fierce determination as the Dindigul Dragons clashed with the Chepauk Super Gillies. The encounter, held on Wednesday, August 31st, at the NPR College Ground in Dindigul, saw Ashwin playing a pivotal role in guiding the Dindigul Dragons to the next stage of the tournament.
Ashwin’s intensity was palpable throughout the match, and his leadership on the field was evident. His frustration peaked during a moment in the chase when he became visibly agitated with a teammate’s performance. As the Dragons pursued their target, Shivam Singh and C Sarath Kumar were at the crease when Kumar’s poorly executed shot was fortuitously dropped by a fielder.
From his position in the dugout near the boundary, Ashwin’s displeasure was unmistakable. He erupted in anger, chastising his teammate and even issuing threats. This incident was captured on video and quickly gained traction on social media, with many applauding Ashwin’s passion and commitment, even in a high-pressure, non-final game.
Ravichandran Ashwin delivered a crucial performance for his team by promoting himself to the No. 3 position and playing a standout innings. He scored an impressive 57 runs off just 35 balls, showcasing his aggressive style with a strike rate exceeding 162. During his innings, Ashwin hit 4 fours and 4 sixes, demonstrating his dominance at the crease.
Teaming up with Shivam Singh, who contributed a solid 64, Ashwin helped forge a key partnership of 101 runs. Their exceptional stand brought the Dindigul Dragons within striking distance of victory. Contributions from C Sarath Kumar (12) and Suboth Bhati (14*) then secured the win for the Dragons, achieving the target with 4 wickets in hand and on the penultimate ball.

“Pressure does these things (on the near collapse), we’ll have to have a chat, but the important thing was we closed the game. It was an imperfect game, despite our shoddy bowling and fielding, we kept them down to a low score.
“As an international and IPL player, the responsibility was with me to do well (with the bat). We haven’t played the perfect game, but hopefullywe’ll do well in the coming games. Thankful for the crowd for having turned up.”
