Australian opener David Warner is set to wrap up his international career following the ongoing T20 World Cup. Former captain Ricky Ponting has praised the veteran batsman as a “natural winner,” highlighting his invaluable contributions beyond just his runs on the field.
Warner, who previously bid adieu to ODI and Test cricket, announced earlier this year that the T20 World Cup 2024 would mark the conclusion of his illustrious career. His final ODI appearance coincided with a World Cup triumph against India in 2023, while his Test journey culminated with a stellar home series against Pakistan, featuring notable batting performances.
Warner’s phased retirement from national duty will culminate with the conclusion of Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign.
“He’s the sort of character you want to have around your team, especially in big tournaments like World Cups. And he’s just one of those natural winners. Everything he does, he wants to win. You can see that with his attitude in the field and the way he goes about his cricket.
“So there’s more than just the runs that we’ll be missing when Warner finally is gone. But hopefully, the depth of Australian cricket is good enough to find someone to come in and fill that void,” Ponting told ESPNcricinfo.Warner entered the World Cup after an injury-marred IPL stint with Delhi Capitals, where Ponting served as head coach. During the IPL, young talent Jake Fraser-McGurk showcased impressive form, catching the attention of selectors during discussions on finalizing the T20 World Cup squad. Consequently, he was named among the traveling reserves.
Regarding Warner’s replacement, Ponting expressed confidence in Fraser-McGurk’s ability to step up at the top of the batting order. Ponting acknowledged the challenge of filling Warner’s shoes but highlighted the team’s depth. He hinted at Fraser-McGurk’s potential inclusion in the T20 team once Warner’s tenure concludes.
“And for that matter, we saw Jake debut for Australia in the one-day stuff in the last Australian summer. I was lucky enough to coach him at the Delhi Capitals this year as well. He’s got extreme talent.”
Should Australia triumph in the T20 spectacle and secure trophies in all three formats simultaneously, David Warner could join a select group of players. Alongside Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Travis Head, Warner would be one of only four players to have participated in all three finals.
