Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain and head coach of the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024, has parted ways with the franchise. DC confirmed the news via X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday (July 13). Ponting, who had been at the helm since the 2018 season, played a crucial role in guiding the team to the IPL final in 2020.
Despite his earlier successes, including coaching Mumbai Indians to victory in the 2015 IPL under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, Ponting’s recent tenure with Delhi Capitals saw the team struggle. Over the last three seasons, Delhi Capitals failed to make it to the playoffs, finishing 5th, 9th, and 6th respectively.
According to ESPNCricinfo, the decision to part ways with Ponting stemmed from the franchise’s dissatisfaction with the team’s performance under his leadership. Known for his illustrious career as a player, which included two ODI World Cup victories in 2003 and 2007, Ponting now departs as Delhi Capitals begin their search for a new head coach.
ESPNCricinfo has reported that following three seasons without achieving the desired results, the owners opted to part ways with Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain renowned for his World Cup triumphs in 2003 and 2007. Consequently, they are now actively seeking a new head coach.
Ponting, who had previously coached Mumbai Indians to victory in the 2015 IPL under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, joined Delhi Capitals in 2018. His experience as a player includes stints with KKR in the IPL, making him a potentially suitable successor to Gautam Gambhir, who recently transitioned from mentor to head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team.
