In previous seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Riyan Parag displayed flashes of potential but struggled with consistency, leading to questions about Rajasthan Royals’ long-term backing of the young player over six years.
Drawing inspiration from his idol Virat Kohli, Parag has silenced his critics and proven himself a standout future prospect for Indian cricket. His breakthrough season saw him amass 573 runs at an average of 52.09 and a strike rate of 149.21.
Following this impressive performance, Parag has climbed the ranks and secured his debut call-up to the Indian team. He will join the squad traveling to Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series starting on July 6.
Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, the 23-year-old reflected on the criticism and negativity he faced on social media during his challenging times. He acknowledged personal growth over the years but admitted the journey had its share of pain.
“During the Covid IPL season (2020). I was 19, I had a great start to the IPL. You dance, you’re active on social media, you’re doing well and everyone loves you for it. I got so much praise from people in Assam, who love me because I’m showcasing our culture there. And then when the runs didn’t come, they’re picking on you. I used to sit on my balcony and stare at the sea endlessly. It took a lot out of me. That’s why I say maturity comes with pain,” said Parag.
Despite facing significant challenges, the all-rounder persevered and took a moment to introspect, describing his resurgence as ‘personal’. He acknowledges that in the past, he may not have prepared adequately for the season, but believes the criticism directed at him was undeserved. Now, he has come to terms with those experiences.
“This sort of a comeback is personal because I had to put up with stuff I didn’t really deserve. Maybe I’ve lacked in preparation, maybe I’ve lacked in a few things, but then I’ve always put my best foot forward. I thought I didn’t deserve all the trolling, but what could I do? People are going to say things regardless. Last year they said I wasn’t good enough to play in the IPL. Now they want me in the Indian team”.
Now part of the national team, Riyan Parag aims to sustain his outstanding batting form, aspiring for a long-term spot in the T20I side and aiming to elevate his game to new heights.
