Robin Uthappa has expressed confidence in Gautam Gambhir’s leadership as the new head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. Uthappa believes Gambhir will create a winning environment and offer strong guidance, praising him as a strategic mastermind.
Gambhir began his coaching role during the white-ball series against Sri Lanka, where India won the T20I series 3-0. However, Sri Lanka reversed fortunes in the ODI series, clinching a 2-0 victory, marking India’s first bilateral ODI series loss to Sri Lanka since 1997.

In a conversation with TOI, Uthappa expressed his belief that Gambhir will cultivate a supportive atmosphere for the players and bring out their best. He noted that Gambhir offers his players a sense of security and empowers them to make the most of their chances.
“He [Gambhir] will seek out major opportunities and strive to seize them. As a leader, I can vouch for his ability to create an environment that enables people to thrive. He is that kind of leader — more than just a great captain, he’s also an excellent tactician and an exceptional leader of people.”
“He fosters a culture within the group that encourages success. Gautam Gambhir is a leader who provides security to his players, and we have seen that in action,” Uthappa added.
Robin Uthappa and Gautam Gambhir have shared the field for both the Indian national team and the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. They were key members of the Indian squad that triumphed in the 2007 T20 World Cup and also played crucial roles for the Kolkata Knight Riders when they clinched the IPL title in 2014.

Robin Uthappa is confident that Gautam Gambhir will shine under pressure. He emphasized Gambhir’s knack for excelling in tense moments and his history of delivering on major stages. Uthappa expects Gambhir to bring these strengths to his new role as head coach.
“He’s always been someone who thrives under pressure and has consistently sought out big stages to deliver. As far as I’m concerned, I see the same qualities in him as a leader within this group,” Uthappa added.
Gautam Gambhir’s upcoming role as head coach will begin with a two-match Test series against Bangladesh at home, starting on September 19. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has instructed Test players, with the exception of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah, to participate in the Duleep Trophy next month.
Later this year, the Indian team will compete in the eagerly awaited five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series against Australia. Additionally, the Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled for February-March of the following year. Gambhir will be tasked with leading the team to success in these significant tournaments.
