Rohan Jaitley, the president of the Delhi & District Cricket Association, is expected to take over from Jay Shah as the next BCCI secretary, provided Shah pursues the role of ICC chairman. Shah is currently a leading candidate to succeed Greg Barclay as the ICC chief. Barclay has announced he will not seek a third term and will step down when his current term ends in late November.
The ICC has confirmed that Barclay, who has held the position since November 2020 and was re-elected in 2022, will not stand for re-election. The deadline for nominations for the ICC chairman role is August 27, and reports suggest Shah has the backing of 16 out of 15 ICC board members. This widespread support makes Shah’s election to the ICC chairmanship appear almost certain.
Under current regulations, a candidate needs a simple majority of nine votes (51%) to be elected ICC chairman, a change from the previous requirement of a two-thirds majority. If Shah applies for the position, his victory is likely to be a formality.
Rohan Jaitley to succeed Jay Shah:
Dainik Bhaskar has reported that Rohan Jaitley is the front-runner to replace Jay Shah if the latter decides to leave BCCI for the ICC. The report also stated that although Jay Shah will be vacating his post, the other BCCI officials including president Roger Binny will be continuing in their roles since they have another year remaining in their respective terms.
Shah is already an important member of ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) sub-committee. If he decides to become the president of the governing body of the game, he will not be the first Indian to head the ICC.
In the past, the likes of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar plied their trades as ICC chairman. 35-year-old Shah is also in line to become the youngest-ever ICC chairman.
