Earlier this year, BCCI secretary Jay Shah accurately foresaw India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. Looking ahead, Shah remains optimistic about India’s prospects in global tournaments, confirming Rohit Sharma’s continued captaincy in Tests and ODIs.
Following India’s victorious campaign at the World Cup in June, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20Is, marking an end to an era that also saw Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja bid farewell to the format.
In a heartfelt video message, Shah extended his congratulations to the team for their World Cup victory, dedicating the success to the retiring trio and departing head coach Rahul Dravid.
“I congratulate Team India for this historic win. I want to dedicate this win to coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja,” Shah said on Sunday.
“In the past one year, this was out third ICC final. In June we lost WTC final, in the ODI World Cup, we won hearts with 10 wins in a row but the cup eluded us. I had said in Rajkot that in June 2024 not only will we win hearts but the cup too.” he added.
“The last five overs proved pivotal to the win. And for that, I want to thank Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya,” Shah said
“Our next target is WTC Final and Champions Trophy. I am confident that under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, we will win both the tournaments,” he added.
India clinched victory over South Africa in the final match held at Barbados’ Kensington Oval on June 29th. In a tense turn of events, South Africa appeared poised for victory with just 30 runs needed off the last 30 balls. However, Indian fast bowlers staged a remarkable comeback, ultimately securing a thrilling seven-run win.
The World Test Championship final is scheduled to take place at Lord’s in 2025, while Pakistan is set to host the Champions Trophy next year.
India secured victory in the Champions Trophy once, back in 2013, and narrowly missed out on the title in the inaugural two editions of the WTC, finishing as runners-up.
