Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the Indian cricket team and their captain Rohit Sharma for breakfast in New Delhi on July 4, following their return from Barbados after winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
During their interaction, PM Modi reminisced about the highlights of India’s victorious campaign and inquired about Rohit’s celebratory gestures on the field following their thrilling final victory over South Africa on June 29.
A notable highlight occurred when Rohit Sharma humorously tasted the Barbados pitch right after receiving the trophy from BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. When queried by PM Modi about this gesture, the Indian captain clarified that it was a spontaneous act, reflecting their long-awaited joy of achieving this victory.
Rohit Sharma told PM Modi: “Where we got the win, I wanted to remember that moment. We played on that pitch and won the match there. We had all waited for that moment. Many times, it came so close, but we couldn’t go ahead. This time, because of everyone, we achieved it, and that pitch was special to me. So, in that moment, it happened.”
Additionally, PM Modi inquired about Rohit Sharma’s viral imitation of the legendary wrestler Ric Flair’s strut while making his way to collect the T20 World Cup trophy. He also playfully teased Yuzvendra Chahal, asking if the leg-spinner was the mastermind behind the idea.

The revelation sparked laughter all around as Rohit disclosed that the Indian team had planned to commemorate their hard-earned World Cup victory with a memorable gesture. The captain acknowledged that both Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal had conceived the idea to celebrate, honoring their persistence and commitment during the tournament in the USA and West Indies.

Rohit said, “It was such a big moment for all of us. And all of us have been waiting for this for so many years. So, the boys told me, don’t go just like that. Do something different.” Then, PM Modi quipped, “So was this Chahal’s idea?” and Rohit agreed by saying both “Chahal and Kuldeep.”
Pat told PM Modi: “Sir, behind this was a normal thought. I had an accident 1.5 years ago. So, it was a very tough time. I remember you calling my mother. So, a lot of things were going on in my mind. But when you called, my mother told me. Sir said there was no problem. Then I relaxed a lot.”
