In a fiercely competitive era, Indian cricket witnessed two phenomenal stars thriving together, culminating in a T20 World Cup victory on Saturday, ending an 11-year wait. Virat Kohli’s graceful cover drives complemented Rohit Sharma’s powerful pull shots, their partnership becoming synonymous with wreaking havoc in world cricket over the years.
As their T20I journey concludes, the mutual respect and admiration between Delhi-born Kohli and Mumbai’s Sharma remain evident till the end.
“Look, he’s been a champion player without a doubt. And we all know what he has done for us. At some point, everyone has to say goodbye to the game and Virat was very clear that this is what he wanted to do and he was very clear before the start of the tournament as well,” stated skipper Rohit Sharma.
Leading up to the final, Virat Kohli had faced scrutiny from the media due to his lackluster performances with the bat in the tournament, failing to reach a fifty in any match.
However, when the moment arrived, Kohli rose to the occasion brilliantly. Despite India’s early struggles at 34-3, Kohli partnered with Axar Patel to craft a crucial 72-run partnership. Kohli played the anchor role while Axar took charge with aggressive batting.
In a turnaround from his earlier struggles, Kohli showcased his class with a well-calculated innings of 76 runs off 59 balls in the final. His contribution was pivotal in steering India away from trouble and setting the stage for their historic total of 176.
“I am very happy for him that he batted like he did in the finals. I know the quality that he has, the big games and all of that. He is going to come good. When we wanted him the most, he came out and performed the way he did. So very happy looking at his career. It’s a nice way to sign off from this format,” Rohit added.
