India’s former T20I captain Rohit Sharma extended his congratulations to the Suryakumar Yadav-led squad following their series victory over Sri Lanka on Tuesday. India clinched a 3-0 whitewash with a thrilling Super Over triumph, marking the beginning of Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as the team’s head coach.
Batting first, India managed only 137 runs. Sri Lanka responded strongly initially but faltered in the latter stages of their chase. Notably, Rinku Singh and captain Suryakumar Yadav showcased their spin-bowling prowess, each picking up crucial wickets in the final overs. The match concluded in a tie, leading to a Super Over where Washington Sundar restricted Sri Lanka to just 2 runs. The Indian captain then sealed victory with a boundary off the first delivery, securing a dramatic win for the visitors.
“Perfect start. Well done Team,” wrote Rohit on X, sharing the picture of Suryakumar Yadav & Co lifting the trophy.
In his debut as a T20 bowler, Suryakumar Yadav, known for his aggressive batting style and off-spin skills, claimed two wickets on consecutive deliveries. This marked a memorable start to his bowling journey in T20 cricket. Preceding him, Rinku Singh also took charge of the ball in the penultimate over, making his mark in the shorter format with a notable performance.
“More than the last over, I feel when we were around 30-4, how the boys showed character, 140 was a par score on that track,” said the Indian skipper at the post-match presentation.
“I told, if we put our heart in, we could pull it off. The amount of skill they have, self-confidence, it makes my job easy. The positivity, the care for each other is unbelievable,” he added.
Next up, the two teams are set to contest a three-match ODI series, with India eagerly anticipating the return of captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The series kicks off on August 2nd.
