Rohit Sharma stands on the brink of making history, aiming to emulate the legendary MS Dhoni as only the second Indian captain to secure a T20 World Cup title. While he was part of the victorious 2007 squad, his pursuit of the trophy as captain remains unfulfilled. Despite coming close last year, with defeats in the WTC and ODI World Cup finals, he’s yet to lift an ICC trophy as skipper.
India’s impressive performance in the current ICC T20 World Cup 2024 has bolstered hopes, and Rohit Sharma is eagerly anticipating leading the team to glory. Their immediate challenge lies in overcoming England in the semifinals, a match sure to evoke memories of their previous encounters.
You learn from the mistakes: Rohit Sharma
In the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal, England dealt India a crushing 10-wicket defeat. They went on to defeat Pakistan in the final. Rohit Sharma, India’s captain, acknowledged the painful loss and emphasized that his team has absorbed the lessons from that match. He assured that they are prepared to approach the upcoming game with a different strategy to seek redemption.
“The last T20 World Cup, obviously we fell short with the bat. You learn from the mistakes that you make in every game that you play and you try and improve that. You try and come out as a better player and then play as a team, a better team,” said Rohit Sharma in a video posted by the ICC.
“There are a few things that we have discussed that we want to do slightly differently, from what we did last time around. We play a lot of T20 cricket. Everyone knows exactly what is expected and what needs to be done to win games, to win tournaments,” he added.
Meanwhile, the victor of the semifinal clash between India and England will face South Africa in the final. South Africa secured their maiden T20 World Cup final berth with a commanding 9-wicket victory over Afghanistan on Thursday (June 27).
