Rohit Sharma set to announce retirement after Sydney Test?
Team India captain Rohit Sharma absence from the playing XI for the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 against Australia has fueled speculation about his future in the format. Despite concerns surrounding his recent form, the seasoned opener has reportedly not yet made any decision regarding retirement.
Rohit’s recent struggles have raised eyebrows within the Indian team management. After missing the first Test, he was moved down to number six in the second match but could only muster scores of 3, 6, and 10. He was later reinstated at the top of the order but continued to falter with scores of 3 and 9 in the MCG Test, which India lost by a significant margin of 184 runs.
Jasprit Bumrah, the team’s vice-captain, was spotted wearing the captain’s blazer during the toss, where he confirmed that Rohit Sharma had opted out of the match. Interestingly, Rohit’s name was also missing from the list of five reserves for the game. Adding to the uncertainty, the 38-year-old did not join the squad for the national anthem ceremony, further fueling questions about his involvement in the match.
“Our captain has shown his leadership, he’s opted to rest in this game. So that shows there’s a lot of unity in our team, there’s no selfishness, whatever is in the team’s best interest, we are looking to do that,” Bumrah said

Rohit Sharma Is Not Thinking of Retirement As of Now – Report
Speculation has arisen regarding whether the Melbourne Test marked Rohit Sharma’s final appearance in the format. However, RevSportz journalist Rohit Juglan has clarified that retirement is not currently on Rohit’s radar. He emphasized that only time will tell if the Melbourne match was indeed his last Test.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has suggested that Rohit Sharma might retire from Test cricket following the Sydney Test. Speaking on the first day of play, Shastri indicated that with no home Test series on the horizon, Rohit could choose to bow out after this match. He lauded Rohit for the possibility of making such a bold and significant decision.
“It still is a brave call for a captain to own up and say, ‘I’m prepared to take the bench in this game,'” Shastri said (via ABC).
“If there was a home season coming up he might’ve thought of carrying on, but I think he might just pull the plug at the end of this Test. He’s not getting younger … it’s not that India don’t have youngsters. There are very, very good players in the wings and it’s time to build. Tough decisions, but there is a time for everything,” Shastri added.
