Poornima Sharma, mother of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, prioritized witnessing her son celebrate India’s T20 World Cup 2024 victory at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Thursday over a scheduled doctor’s appointment. She was among the supportive crowd of over 30,000 fans who cheered on Rohit Sharma as he celebrated the triumph.
Rohit Sharma had experienced a heart-wrenching loss in the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia. However, within about seven months, he achieved a remarkable feat by joining the elite company of Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni as the third captain to lead India to victory in the final of an ICC World Cup.
In the T20 World Cup final in Barbados on June 29, the Men in Blue clinched a thrilling victory over South Africa by 7 runs. This victory ended India’s 11-year wait for an ICC trophy, with their previous triumph being the Champions Trophy in 2013. Emotional scenes unfolded as Rohit Sharma, visibly moved, shed tears of joy upon securing his maiden ICC trophy as captain in his illustrious career.

In an interview with the Indian Express, Poornima Sharma shared that she chose to skip a scheduled doctor’s appointment to witness her son being felicitated by the BCCI. She described the occasion as a unique and emotional experience for their family, highlighting the significance of the moment.
Poornima also revealed that Rohit had made the decision to retire from T20Is even before the tournament commenced, adding another layer of sentiment to their journey during the T20 World Cup 2024 celebrations.
“I have never thought I would see this day. Before going to the World Cup, he had come to meet us and said that he wanted to quit T20Is after this. I just said try to win. I was not feeling well today and had a doctor’s appointment, but I still came as I wanted to see this day,” Rohit Sharma’s mother told Indian Express.
“I can’t express my happiness. Look at the cheering. I have never experienced this kind of atmosphere. The amount of love he is getting is because of his hard work and dedication. I’m the happiest mother today. What more can I ask now! This day won’t come again in life. As he was taking the lap of honor, it was an emotional moment as he has been playing for a day like this,” she added.
Rohit Sharma displayed outstanding leadership and crucial batting prowess for India during the T20 World Cup 2024. He emerged as India’s top run-scorer in the tournament, accumulating 257 runs with an impressive average of 36.71 and a strike rate of 156.70.
Following India’s triumphant victory in the T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the T20 format, having amassed 4231 runs in 159 matches, marking the end of a stellar career in T20 cricket.
