In a recent Major League Cricket match between the San Francisco Unicorns and the Seattle Orcas at Church Street Park in Morrisville, North Carolina, the perilous nature of cricket became starkly evident. During the third over of the second innings, South African fast bowler Carmi le Roux found himself in a harrowing situation. While bowling a full delivery just outside the off-stump to fellow countryman Ryan Rickleton, le Roux was struck on the head by a powerful shot aimed straight back at him.
The gravity of the incident was immediately apparent to everyone on the field. The batter, upon realizing what had transpired, visibly tensed up. Swift action was taken by the umpire, who promptly summoned the medical team to attend to le Roux, ensuring his immediate care and well-being. Unfortunately, the blow meant le Roux was unable to continue playing for the remainder of the match. The responsibility of completing the over fell to USA international Corey Anderson.
Footage of the incident also captured Rickleton’s visible concern and disturbance over what had transpired, clearly showing his empathy towards his opponent.
As of now, there has been no official statement released by the franchise on their website or social media platforms regarding the incident.
From a match standpoint, it was a successful outing for the Unicorns, securing a 23-run victory. Leading the bowling attack was former England international Liam Plunkett, who delivered a stellar performance by claiming 3 wickets while conceding only 26 runs.
Looking ahead, the Unicorns are gearing up for their next fixture against MI New York scheduled for Friday at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas. With five points from four games, they currently occupy the third spot on the points table.
