Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian opener, is poised to step into a new role as the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team. His recent stint as a mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders culminated in their triumphant third IPL title win, marking a significant achievement in his coaching career. Despite his impactful contribution, Gambhir parted ways with the franchise after a solitary season at the helm.
Just a few months ago, Gambhir received accolades from KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan following the team’s historic victory in the IPL 2024 final against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai. The Bollywood icon’s gesture of kissing Gambhir on the forehead underscored his appreciation for Gambhir’s leadership and strategic acumen.
Prior to his appointment as head coach of Team India, Gambhir shared a heartwarming moment with Khan at the wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant in Mumbai. A viral video captured SRK warmly embracing the former Indian captain before engaging in a brief conversation, highlighting their mutual respect and camaraderie.
Gambhir is set to assume his role starting with the Sri Lanka tour commencing on July 27 in Pallekele. However, as per PTI reports, the specifics of his financial agreement as India’s head coach are still under discussion.
Nevertheless, Gambhir is currently prioritizing assembling a support staff that aligns with his vision. His immediate focus is on preparing for the significant challenges that lie ahead during his anticipated three-year tenure.
“For Gautam, it was important that he took charge and salary and other stuff can be worked out as it’s not going anywhere. It is similar to the case of Ravi Shastri in 2014 when he was first made Director of Cricket over head coach Duncan Fletcher,” a source was quoted as saying by the news agency.
According to the report, Gambhir will have autonomy in forming his own team and will collaborate closely with NCA coaches responsible for India A and U-19 teams, as well as targeted players’ development pathways.
