Pakistan’s cricket scene is currently fraught with turbulence as Shaheen Afridi, the frontline pace bowler, has recently shared a mysterious message amidst allegations of misconduct with team coaches. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly investigating Afridi’s behavior within the team, reflecting broader challenges facing Pakistani cricket.
This comes at a time when Pakistan’s cricketing fortunes have been less than stellar, with a disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup following defeats to the USA and India. Prior to this, setbacks included a series loss in England and an unexpected defeat in Ireland.
In response to these struggles, the PCB has made significant changes, including the dismissal of former cricketers Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq due to the team’s underwhelming performance in the T20 World Cup. Furthermore, team manager Mansoor Rana has also been removed, reportedly due to his alleged inaction regarding Afridi’s reported misconduct. These decisions underscore the PCB’s efforts to stabilize the team amidst ongoing challenges.
Shaheen Afridi’s cryptic post
Reports from Pakistani media indicate a heated incident involving Shaheen Afridi and batting coach Mohammad Yousuf during their tour of England in May. Allegedly, a verbal altercation occurred between the two, prompting Afridi to apologize publicly to the team afterward. While the team management opted to settle the issue following Afridi’s apology, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has initiated an investigation into the matter. This development suggests ongoing scrutiny and management of disciplinary matters within the national cricket setup.
Amidst the unfolding events, Shaheen Afridi opted to break his silence on Thursday (July 11) through a cryptic social media post. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he shared a video showcasing himself bowling in the nets with the caption: “Rise Above.”
Shaheen Afridi’s journey this year has been marked by significant ups and downs. Initially appointed as the captain of Pakistan’s T20I team at the beginning of the year, he faced a swift removal from the role after just one series. In April, the PCB reinstated Babar Azam as the T20I skipper, leading to Afridi’s shift from leadership responsibilities.
His performance in the T20 World Cup further highlighted his challenges, starting with going wicketless against the USA and managing only one wicket against India. Although he picked up four wickets in the subsequent matches, Pakistan’s campaign ended prematurely without advancing to the Super 8s.
Looking ahead, Afridi is expected to return to action when Pakistan hosts Bangladesh for a Test series next month, providing him with an opportunity to bounce back from recent setbacks.
