Indian national cricket team batter Shreyas Iyer is set to join Mumbai’s squad for the Buchi Babu tournament. He will be teaming up with his fellow Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav, who has recently declared his availability for the tournament and expressed his aspiration to play Test cricket for India.
Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav will be playing together for Mumbai in the Buchi Babu tournament, organized by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. Their match against Jammu and Kashmir is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, August 27th, in Coimbatore.
Mumbai Cricket Association confirms Shreyas Iyer will participate in the Buchi Babu Tournament.
Deepak Patil, joint secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association, confirmed that Shreyas Iyer will be included in the Mumbai squad for their upcoming match against Jammu and Kashmir in the Buchi Babu Invitational tournament. He made this announcement in an official statement.
“Shreyas Iyer will play for Mumbai at the Buchi Babu Invitational tournament organized by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. He will be playing vs Jammu & Kashmir from 27th August at Coimbatore.”
For Shreyas Iyer, playing red-ball cricket in the Buchi Babu tournament represents a crucial chance to reclaim his position in the Indian national team. After being dropped following the two Tests against England, where he struggled with a series of low scores and had an underwhelming record in overseas conditions, Iyer is eager to return to form.
Initially replacing Ajinkya Rahane in the Indian Test squad, Iyer made a strong start with a debut century. Although he displayed consistency early on, his performances on overseas tours were disappointing, leading to his removal from the team.
In the upcoming Buchi Babu tournament match against Jammu and Kashmir, Iyer will look to make a significant impact. With several Test series scheduled for India, a strong showing could boost his chances of making a comeback. Iyer was dropped after scoring 35, 13, 27, and 29 in the first two Tests against England, and overall, he has amassed 811 runs in 14 Tests at an average of 38.86, including one century and five half-centuries.
Iyer will be joined by Suryakumar Yadav, recently appointed as the captain of the Indian T20I team. Yadav, who has expressed a desire to play in all formats, sees the Buchi Babu tournament as a valuable opportunity to strengthen his case for a Test recall. Having played only one Test—against Australia, where he didn’t make a significant impact—Yadav will be aiming to make a mark in this tournament.
Both players will be keenly watched under the new head coach Gautam Gambhir, with their performances potentially influencing their future roles in the Test team.
