Out-of-favour Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer is reportedly on the verge of rejoining the BCCI central contracts list. Having last featured in a Test series against England earlier this year, Iyer was sidelined following the second Test of the series. Despite earlier concerns over a back issue, he was deemed fit for selection. During this period, the BCCI had mandated that players must participate in state team fixtures if not part of the national squad.
However, Iyer did not fulfill this requirement, skipping Mumbai’s Ranji games after his Test exclusion. Instead, he attended a Kolkata Knight Riders pre-season camp, returning only for the semifinals and finals of the Ranji Trophy. This decision drew criticism from the BCCI, leading to his exclusion from the central contracts alongside Ishan Kishan, who faced a similar issue with Jharkhand.
Nonetheless, recent reports indicate a reversal of fortunes for Iyer. The Indian Express suggests he is poised for a comeback in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka, likely securing his place in the BCCI’s annual contract. Notably, the decision coincides with Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as the team’s head coach, following their successful collaboration at Kolkata Knight Riders earlier this year.
Shreyas Iyer aims to impress.
If Shreyas Iyer secures a spot in the Indian team for the upcoming ODI series, he’ll be eager to start off strong. His standout performances with the bat in the previous ODI World Cup highlight his credentials for inclusion in the playing XI.
Iyer emerged as India’s third-highest run-scorer in the tournament, amassing 530 runs across 11 matches, which included two centuries and three half-centuries. His ability to score consistently underlines his potential impact if selected.
