Shreyas Iyer asserts that he had indeed voiced his worries regarding his back troubles following the World Cup, yet his concerns went unnoticed or disregarded. He is now poised to captain KKR in the IPL 2024 final against SRH on Sunday, May 26th.

Shreyas Iyer asserts that his voiced concerns regarding his persistent back problems after last year’s World Cup, particularly during Test matches, fell on deaf ears. He had recuperated from a back ailment to rejoin the Indian team prior to the Asia Cup last year and subsequently participated in the home World Cup. Following this, he was selected for the first two Tests against England but was absent for the rest of the series.

During his absence from the Indian team, Shreyas was unavailable for several matches for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. Although he made a comeback for Mumbai during the knockout stages, by then, the BCCI had already revoked his central contract. Speaking before the IPL 2024 final, the KKR captain mentioned that he had previously raised concerns about the matter, but they were disregarded.

“I was definitely struggling after the World Cup in the longer format,”

“When I raised my concern, no one was agreeing to it,” said Shreyas.

Competition is with myself

Shreyas emphasized that his primary competition is with himself, aiming to give his best performance and execute KKR’s plans effectively. He stated, “As the IPL approached, my focus was solely on ensuring that I give my all and that our team executes our plans as effectively as possible. Achieving this would put us in an excellent position, and that’s exactly where we find ourselves now.”

Shreyas acknowledged the challenge of transitioning from red-ball to white-ball cricket, both as a batsman and a bowler. He admitted it was tough initially but gradually adapted and caught up with the rhythm of the game. “Moving from red-ball to white-ball cricket presents its challenges, but once you acclimate to it, you start syncing up with the rest of the players,” Shreyas commented. Now, he is all set to guide KKR in their fourth IPL final against SRH on Sunday, May 26th.
