India’s vice-captain Shubman Gill was unavailable for the second T20I against Sri Lanka on July 28th at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
At the toss, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav announced that Gill was sidelined due to neck spasms. The cricketer woke up with stiffness in his neck, which ultimately rendered him unfit for the match.
In Gill’s absence, Sanju Samson was brought in and tasked with opening the batting. Unfortunately, Samson was dismissed for a golden duck, falling to Maheesh Theekshana on the second ball of the second over as Theekshana knocked over his stumps with a sharp delivery.
As the third T20I approaches, speculation is mounting about Gill’s availability for the final game of the series. While there is no official update yet, various media sources are closely following his recovery.
According to Revsportz, Shubman Gill’s participation in the third T20I against Sri Lanka will hinge on his recovery. His fitness will be evaluated before the match, and a decision on his availability will be made a few hours prior to the game. The medical team is currently monitoring his condition closely.
Gill made a significant impact in the first T20I, scoring 34 runs off just 15 balls with aggressive intent. His innings helped India set a total exceeding 200 runs and secure a 43-run victory, setting a positive tone for the series.
Should Gill receive medical clearance, he is expected to return directly to the playing XI. However, there’s a possibility that the team management might opt to rest him, particularly considering his involvement in the ODI series.
If Gill is ruled out or rested for the final T20I, Sanju Samson could step in. Samson, who was dismissed for a golden duck in the second game, will be eager to make a strong comeback and prove his worth.
India seals the series with a 2-0 lead.
India has already secured the T20I series, having triumphed in the first two matches. In the opener, India showcased an outstanding performance both with the bat and ball. They set a formidable total of 213 runs and, despite facing some pressure, managed to regain control and clinch the victory.
In the second T20I, India’s bowlers made an impressive start, restricting Sri Lanka to 161 runs. With a revised target of 78 from 8 overs, India achieved the goal in just 6.3 overs, winning by 7 wickets and taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
