India’s rising star, Shubman Gill, is poised to be announced as the country’s new Test vice-captain. In a significant update, the BCCI is expected to reveal Gill’s appointment ahead of India’s upcoming Test series against Bangladesh.
The 24-year-old cricketer was recently named vice-captain for India’s ODI and T20I teams for their tour of Sri Lanka. During this tour, Suryakumar Yadav will captain the T20I side, while Rohit Sharma will lead the ODI team.
Shubman Gill will be appointed India’s Test vice-captain.
Reports indicate that Shubman Gill is set to be appointed as India’s vice-captain for the upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh. This update was confirmed by Rohit Juglan, a journalist from Revsportz, who shared the news in a video on X (formerly Twitter).
This development means Shubman Gill will now serve as India’s vice-captain across all three formats. His transformation from a promising batter to a key leader in one of the world’s most prominent teams has been remarkable.
The selectors have clearly signaled their vision for the future, seeing Gill as a potential captain in the making. With Rohit Sharma approaching his late thirties and Suryakumar Yadav also at 33, Gill is positioned to be ready for the captaincy by the time his senior counterparts step away from the game.
In a recent media interaction, Ajit Agarkar outlined the rationale behind selecting Gill as India’s next vice-captain.
“Shubman is a guy we feel is a three-format player, firstly. And he seems to show a lot of good qualities over the last year or so. That’s why we wanted to have somebody who can also learn from a couple of senior guys who are there. Surya is there. Rohit is still around. We don’t face the same challenge again — suddenly try and look for a new captain in case there is an injury or loss of form,” Agarkar said.
That’s the idea again. He has shown some decent leadership qualities. So we want him to get some experience and build going forward. There are no guarantees in life, but at this point, that’s how it looks,” he added.
Shubman Gill is disappointed with his T20I form.
In a press conference before the first T20I between Sri Lanka and India, Shubman Gill was questioned about his recent T20I performances. The young cricketer expressed dissatisfaction with his form in the shortest format and is determined to make improvements in the upcoming matches.
“At a personal level, I’m not satisfied with my performances in T20Is till the T20 World Cup (2024). It hasn’t been up to my expectations. Going forward, in the upcoming cycle, we’ve about 30-40 T20Is, and I’d hope we improve on our performance as a team and I can improve as a player,” Gill said at the pre-match press conference.
Shubman Gill has accumulated 505 runs in 19 T20Is, with an average of 29.7 and a strike rate of 139.50. Although these statistics are solid, the Indian vice-captain is keen to elevate his performance to the next level.
