Shubman Gill, India’s vice-captain, recently discussed Abhishek Nayar’s role within the team’s coaching staff. Gill is currently with Team India for their Sri Lanka tour, which includes three T20Is and three ODIs.
Abhishek Nayar was recently appointed as India’s new assistant coach by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), following a recommendation from the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir. This tour marks the first assignment for both Gambhir and Nayar in their coaching roles with India.
Previously, Gambhir and Nayar worked together on the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) coaching staff. In IPL 2024, Gambhir was KKR’s mentor while Nayar served as the assistant coach, and their successful partnership helped KKR win the title.
While speaking to the media, Shubman Gill opened up about working with Abhishek Nayar in the Indian team. Gill claimed that Nayar is very hard-working and does not leave the ground until every player is fully satisfied.
“He (Abhishek Nayar) is very hard-working. His work on the ground is visible. He doesn’t leave the ground until all the players are satisfied with their skills. I think that’s his biggest specialty,” Gill said.Shubman Gill and Abhishek Nayar have previously worked with Kolkata Knight Riders before. Gill used to play for KKR before coming to Gujarat Titans for their first edition of IPL 2022. He played for KKR during 2018-2021.
Abhishek Nayar’s contribution to KKR
Abhishek Nayar, who had been with KKR as an assistant coach since 2018, continued with the team until IPL 2024 before transitioning to Team India. Over the years, Nayar has been acknowledged for nurturing many KKR players, earning praise from both players and support staff for his strong work ethic.
Shubman Gill and Nayar worked together for four years until Gill was released by KKR prior to the IPL 2022 auction and later joined the Gujarat Titans.
Nayar is also credited with revitalizing the career of former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik. Once out of form and on the verge of being overlooked for Team India, Karthik made a successful return as a finisher, largely due to Nayar’s influence.
In addition to reviving Dinesh Karthik’s career, Abhishek Nayar has been instrumental in the rise of Shreyas Iyer, who has become a key player in India’s middle order for white-ball cricket. Nayar has also served as the head coach of the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
India’s tour of Sri Lanka will kick off on July 27 with a three-match T20I series. The T20Is will be held in Pallekele on July 27, 28, and 30. The ODIs are scheduled to take place in Colombo on August 2, 4, and 7.
