Wanindu Hasaranga and his team are facing challenges ahead of their T20 World Cup 2024 match against South Africa in New York. The Sri Lanka skipper has raised concerns about the distance between their accommodation and new Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Long Island.
Hasaranga revealed that the team has to start their journey to the stadium at least three hours in advance due to the long commute. With the game scheduled for 10:30 AM local time, the team is forced to arrive early in the morning, despite the prime time slot for TV audiences in the Indian subcontinent.
The Sri Lankan captain expressed frustration at having to travel so far and arrive so early for the match. Reports suggest that Sri Lanka, South Africa, and Ireland have all faced travel disruptions on their way to New York and have lodged complaints with the International Cricket Board.
After the match against South Africa, Sri Lanka will go on to face Bangladesh, Nepal, and the Netherlands in various locations across the United States and the Caribbean.
Wanindu Hasaranga mentioned that Sri Lanka has made adequate preparations for the tournament.
“First of all, we prepared really well. We came two weeks early to North Carolina, had practice sessions there and we played two practice matches in Florida. I think as a team, we prepared really well and the conditions are similar to Sri Lanka. So, I think as a team we prepared really well,” Hasaranga said.
