Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed confidence in Virat Kohli’s ability to bounce back despite his struggles in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Kohli, who was promoted to open the innings, has failed to make an impact after a successful IPL season.
In his three appearances, Kohli has only managed five runs. His tournament began with a brief innings of 1 run off 5 balls against Ireland, followed by dismissals for 4 runs against Pakistan and a golden duck against the USA.
While India’s overall performance has been strong, Kohli’s form is a notable concern heading into the Super 8s. Nonetheless, Gavaskar remains optimistic about Kohli’s potential to rediscover his form in the upcoming matches.
“These are early days in the tournament, there’s still a lot of the tournament to go. Suddenly everything can’t go wrong just because the man has got three low scores. It doesn’t mean that he is not batting well. Sometimes you get a good delivery. Nothing to worry about,” Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports.
“When you’re playing for any team, when you’re playing for your country, there’s no greater motivation. He has done so well for India over the years. He has performed well in so many matches. Basically, we have to show faith in him. He has enough faith in himself. We must believe that he will come good sooner than later,” he added.
India secured their place in the Super 8s despite Virat Kohli’s challenges in the current World Cup. The team has excelled with three consecutive victories, beginning with an impressive 8-wicket triumph over Ireland. This was followed by a thrilling 6-run victory against traditional rivals Pakistan, and they secured their spot in the next round by defeating the USA. India’s upcoming match against Canada will conclude their group stage before the commencement of the Super 8s.
