Former Indian cricket star Suresh Raina has singled out the X-factor for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Raina, a former captain himself, has placed his confidence in Shivam Dube to play a pivotal role in securing victory for India in the tournament set to take place in the USA and the Caribbean.
The selection of Shivam Dube over Rinku Singh in India’s T20 World Cup squad sparked significant interest. However, Dube’s consistent performances in the IPL over recent years made his inclusion almost inevitable. Renowned as a “spin-hitting monster,” Dube’s prowess against spin bowling has been exceptional, notably benefiting his IPL franchise, the Chennai Super Kings.
Dube’s effectiveness in tackling spinners has been a standout feature for the Chennai Super Kings, particularly during the crucial middle overs. His batting performance has been consistently strong, making him a mainstay for his team and a key contributor to their success.
During the latest IPL season, Dube showcased remarkable form, displaying an ability to accelerate the run rate in the middle overs. This demonstration of skill caught the attention of Indian selectors, especially given the anticipated spin-friendly conditions in the USA and the Caribbean.
In the IPL 2024, Dube amassed an impressive 396 runs in 14 innings, including three half-centuries, at a remarkable strike rate of 162.30. His contributions played a significant role in the Chennai Super Kings’ campaign, keeping them in contention for the playoffs.
Beyond his batting prowess, Dube’s bowling capabilities add another dimension to his value. His medium pace on slow Caribbean surfaces could prove invaluable for Team India, enhancing the team’s balance and versatility in different match scenarios.
Suresh Raina believes that Shivam Dube could be the crucial factor for India’s success in the World Cup.
Suresh Raina highlighted Shivam Dube’s significance in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, noting Dube’s capability to hit powerful sixes with ease. Raina emphasized that Dube could be the team’s X-factor and should be included in the playing XI due to his dual ability to bat and bowl. Speaking at the World Championship of Leagues launch, Raina elaborated on this point, as reported by India Today.
“He has to play in the World Cup. See, the ability to stand still while hitting those big sixes is very rare. Shivam Dube can be the x-factor for India to win the World Cup.
“So Rohit will have to take the call whether he wants to play Virat (Kohli) up the top, but then Yashasvi is also batting with a different kind of flair. If the situation arises, Shivam can also bowl for the side.”
It remains to be seen if Shivam Dube can get a place in the Indian XI for the World Cup or not. The first match for the team will be against Ireland on 5th June.
