India’s T20 World Cup 2024 journey begins on June 5th as they gear up to kickstart their campaign.
The Indian cricket team commenced their World Cup preparations in New York, where they engaged in an extensive three-hour net practice session at Cantiague Park, situated approximately five miles away from Nassau County Stadium. Led by Rohit Sharma, the Men in Blue also undertook a brief running and conditioning session on Tuesday.
Placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Canada, Ireland, and co-hosts the USA, Team India is slated to compete in three matches at the venue, including a highly anticipated showdown against Pakistan. Additionally, they are scheduled to play a warm-up match against Bangladesh at the same venue on Saturday, June 1.
The India squad comprises Rohit Sharma as captain, with Hardik Pandya as vice-captain, along with players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohd. Siraj. The reserves include Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan.
According to Wasim Jaffer, the opening pair for the World Cup should comprise Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Wasim Jaffer, the ex-Indian opener, advocated for Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal to open in the World Cup. Jaffer suggested that Rohit Sharma should be positioned at either No. 3 or 4 in the batting order during the tournament, citing his adeptness against spin bowling.
“Kohli and Jaiswal should open in the World Cup imo. Rohit & SKY should bat 3 and 4 depending on the start we get. Rohit plays spin really well so batting at 4 shouldn’t be a concern,” Jaffer wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
In T20 Internationals, Rohit Sharma has batted 12 times in the No. 3 and 4 positions, accumulating 315 runs at an average of 39.37, including four half-centuries. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has opened in T20Is on nine occasions, amassing 400 runs at a strike rate of 161.29. Kohli teamed up with Rohit as an opener in a T20I against England in 2021.
