Indian cricket fans are eagerly anticipating the arrival of star batter Virat Kohli in New York for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, which will be held in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA). Kohli is the only player from India’s T20 World Cup squad, including the four reserves, who has yet to arrive in the USA.
During the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Kohli played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), where he displayed remarkable form, amassing 741 runs with an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of 154.69. Despite his impressive performance, the 35-year-old batter was unable to lead his team to their first IPL title.
The T20 World Cup 2024 is set to begin on Sunday, June 2, with an opening match between the USA and Canada. Team India will start their campaign against Ireland on June 5, following a warm-up match against Bangladesh on Saturday.
Report: Virat Kohli Took a Break for Personal Reasons
All members of the Indian squad have arrived in the United States for the T20 World Cup, with the exception of Virat Kohli. Reports indicate that Kohli had notified the BCCI about his delayed arrival. According to the news agency PTI, the former Indian captain is expected to arrive in New York on Friday.
“Kohli took a break for personal work after RCB’s IPL ouster and in all likelihood, he will join the squad by Friday,” they said.
Reports indicate that Virat Kohli is unlikely to participate in India’s only warm-up match against Bangladesh due to the length of his flight.
“It is not clear if he would be able to take part in the only warm-up game against Bangladesh on Saturday after a long flight,” PTI wrote.
Indian cricketers arrived in New York in groups. The first group, which included captain Rohit Sharma, the coaching staff, and other players, left Mumbai on May 25. Players from the Rajasthan Royals (RR), namely Sanju Samson, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, arrived a few days later after participating in the IPL Qualifier 2.
The 2007 T20 World Cup champions will begin their campaign against Ireland in New York on June 5. Led by Rohit Sharma, the team will face their arch-rival Pakistan in a highly anticipated match on June 9. They will then play against the USA on June 12 before moving to Lauderhill, Florida, to compete against Canada on June 15.
