Udhayanidhi Stalin promised to build a cricket stadium in Coimbatore.
State Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Udhayanidhi Stalin, has asked officials to identify an appropriate site for the new cricket stadium. He highlighted that this new venue would serve as Tamil Nadu’s second international-standard stadium, following the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
“As a sports and cricket enthusiast, I would like to add one more promise to our election manifesto for #Elections2024: 🏏🏟️”
“We will take efforts to establish a state-of-the-art cricket stadium in Coimbatore, with the active participation of the sports loving people of #Coimbatore. As highlighted by our Minister @TRBRajaa , this stadium aims to be Tamil Nadu’s second international-standard cricket venue after Chennai’s iconic MAC stadium. Our government and Sports Minister @Udhaystalin are committed to nurturing talent and enhancing sports infrastructure in Tamil Nadu.”
Afterward, three potential sites were narrowed down, and the minister conducted personal inspections of each. The Ondipudur area in Coimbatore has been chosen for the new cricket stadium. The Tamil Nadu government has now issued tenders to create a detailed project report for the construction of this international facility.
Tamil Nadu will build a stadium with the largest seating capacity in the world.
According to DT Next, the new cricket stadium will be located 16 km from Coimbatore city. It will boast the largest seating capacity in the country and include premium features such as VIP and corporate suites, a players’ lounge, a media center, public cafeterias and restaurants, viewing galleries, and a cricket museum.
Tamil Nadu already has an international cricket venue in Chennai. The M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, home to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), is the second oldest cricket ground in India. While the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad holds the record for the largest capacity globally, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is known for its vast dimensions.
The Department has suggested using the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru as models for the new stadium, with Lord’s Cricket Ground in London as an additional reference.
Bidders are expected to integrate cutting-edge design features, including facilities for player and coach research and rehabilitation, as well as high-quality amenities for media, administration, and the public.
