Tanveer Ahmed has strongly criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision to appoint former pace ace and coach Waqar Younis. Reports suggest PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi has entrusted multiple roles to Younis within Pakistan Cricket.
In a notable development, Waqar has been named as an advisor to PCB chairman Mohsin. Sources within the PCB have informed Cricbuzz that the renowned fast bowler will start his advisory role under Mohsin’s guidance from August 1, 2024.
Former Pakistan pacer Tanveer Ahmed criticizes Waqar Younis’s new role at PCB.
He will be reporting directly to the PCB chairman. With his extensive experience, the 52-year-old will oversee the national teams and coaching staff in his new role. Waqar’s responsibilities will encompass handling tasks and assignments assigned by the PCB chairman that require his expertise.
In managing both the red-ball and white-ball teams, Waqar will supervise current coaches Gary Kirsten (white-ball head coach) and Jason Gillespie (red-ball head coach), who will report directly to him. His duties also include coordinating with the Pakistan selection committee, which has recently come under scrutiny.
Additionally, Waqar’s role extends to overseeing various tasks and projects designated by PCB chairman Naqvi. Apart from national teams management, the legendary fast bowler will also supervise domestic cricket, the high-performance center, coaching staff, and groundsmen.
Having enjoyed an illustrious career spanning 87 Tests and 262 ODIs, Waqar will play a pivotal role in strategizing and advancing cricket development in Pakistan.
His appointment allows PCB chairman Naqvi to focus more on governance, infrastructure, administration, commercial agreements, and the broader future of Pakistan cricket. Initially hired as a consultant, plans are underway to formalize Waqar’s position, akin to Rob Key’s role as managing director of the men’s team at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
Waqar Younis is capable of making the right decisions: PCB
The PCB source was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz: “The PCB believed there was a need for an experienced individual who understands the language of cricketers and is capable of making the right decisions, which is why Waqar was brought on board.”
Following the announcement of Waqar’s appointment as a PCB advisor, Tanveer Ahmed voiced his dissent on social media, labeling it as the most ill-advised decision in Pakistan cricket history.
Tanveer Ahmed posted on X: “Waqar Younis ko cricket board main job dena meri nazar main history ka sab say worst decision hain. (Appointing Waqar Younis to a role in the board is, in my view, the worst decision in the history of cricket.”
