On Saturday (June 22), Virat Kohli finally surpassed the 30-run mark in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The right-handed batsman accumulated 37 runs during the Super 8 match between India and Bangladesh.
The former India captain has faced criticism for his poor batting performances in this tournament and will be hoping that this latest innings provides him some relief. Kohli had managed only 5 runs across three group stage games. In the first match against Ireland, he was dismissed for 1 run off 5 balls. This was followed by a 4-run innings against Pakistan, and in the match against the USA, he did not manage to score at all. Kohli finally reached double digits in the previous game against Afghanistan, scoring 24 runs.
Similar to the Afghanistan game, Kohli got off to a promising start against Bangladesh but failed to convert it into a substantial score. He was dismissed for 37 by Tanzim Hasan Sakib in the 9th over. The right-arm pacer clean-bowled Kohli as the veteran batsman attempted to play an aggressive shot, advancing down the pitch. Sakib cleverly adjusted his length, leaving Kohli unable to connect with the ball, which crashed into the stumps.
Following the dismissal, Sakib showed his excitement with a subdued celebration, marking the departure of the Indian star.
At the current moment of reporting, India stood at 114 for 4 in the 13th over of the game. The early dismissal came when Rohit Sharma fell for 23 runs to Shakib Al Hasan. Soon after, Tanzim Hasan Sakib struck in the 9th over, removing both Virat Kohli and the in-form Suryakumar Yadav, leaving India struggling at 77 for 3.
Following the pattern of Kohli and Rohit, Rishabh Pant also made a promising start but couldn’t capitalize, departing after scoring 36 runs.
