
New Zealand clinched their inaugural victory in the ICC T20 World Cup by defeating Uganda with dominant performances from fast bowlers Tim Southee and Trent Boult. Speaking after the game in the post-match presentation, “Our guys were good. It was a tough surface. Obviously, there was plenty there in the surface, which made life pretty difficult. It was nice to do that job in the first half. The teams have been getting more exposure at the highest level, which helps to develop as a team. Having that exposure is always a great experience to learn from. We need to train again and play again. The same discussions are going on again, to recover tomorrow and then train and play again, being respectful of the conditions and the surface, and playing as well as you can.”
Following this victory, New Zealand occupies the third position in Group C, having secured two points from one win and two losses. However, they are out of contention for the Super Eights stage, which West Indies and Afghanistan have qualified for. Uganda holds the fourth spot with two points, earned from one win and three losses.
New Zealand won the toss and asked Uganda to bat first.
Uganda suffered two early setbacks in the first over, as pacer Trent Boult dismissed Simon Ssesazi and Simon Ssesazi without scoring, both falling victim to golden ducks.
In the fourth over, Tim Southee claimed Uganda’s third wicket in succession by dismissing Alpesh Ramjani leg-before wicket for a scoreless six-ball innings. At the 3.4 overs mark, Uganda stood at 2 for 3. By the end of the powerplay, after six overs, Uganda’s score was 9 for 3.Uganda struggled against the high-quality pace bowling of Boult and Southee. By the halfway point of their innings, they had reached a score of 21 runs for the loss of five wickets in 10 overs.
Spinners Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra made valuable contributions with the ball. Apart from Kenneth Waiswa, no other batsman managed to reach double figures as Uganda was bowled out for 40 runs in 18.4 overs.During their chase, New Zealand lost their young opener Finn Allen early, scoring nine runs off 17 balls before being dismissed by Riazat Ali Shah. However, Devon Conway displayed good form and, along with Ravindra, efficiently chased down the remaining target with 88 balls to spare.
