In a significant gesture of support, the BCCI, through Secretary Jay Shah’s announcement on Twitter, has allocated INR 8.5 crore to the Indian Olympic Association to aid Indian athletes competing in the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024.
A total of 117 athletes from India, representing various sports disciplines, are set to participate in the prestigious event, which commences on July 26.
Among the notable Indian athletes heading to the Olympics are V. Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, Neeraj Chopra, who clinched Olympic gold, Mirabai Chanu, an Olympic silver medalist, Lovlina Borgohain, an Olympic bronze medalist, and Sharath Kamal, who will lead the Indian contingent alongside Sindhu as the flag-bearer during the Opening Ceremony.
BCCI’s Big Moves
“I am proud to announce that the  @BCCI will be supporting our incredible athletes representing #India at the 2024 Paris Olympics. We are providing INR 8.5 Crores to the IOA for the campaign. To our entire contingent, we wish you the very best. Make India proud! Jai Hind” said Jay Shah on Sunday.Â
Following India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup last month, Jay Shah, as BCCI Secretary, announced a substantial prize money of INR 125 crore for the Indian cricketers who contributed to the victory.
During his tenure, Shah has overseen significant improvements in the administrative and technical aspects of the BCCI. His proactive role has ensured enhanced facilities for both men’s and women’s cricketers, exemplified by the recent announcement of equal pay for players of both genders.
Ahead of the Women’s Asia Cup, the President of the Asian Cricket Council conveyed his best wishes to all participating teams in the tournament, highlighting the regional significance of the event.
“I’m pleased to announce BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing a pay equity policy for our contracted women cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian Cricket,” Shah tweeted last year.
“The @BCCIWomen cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support. Jai Hind,” he added in another tweet.
While the India men’s team have recently won their second T20 World Cup last month, the Indian women’s team are currently participating in the ongoing Women’s Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. They have made a great start to their title defense by beating Pakistan and UAE in their first two games by comfortable margins. India beat Pakistan by seven wickets and UAE by 78 runs
