The streets of Mumbai were already bustling before Team India’s victory parade commenced on Thursday evening. A throng of passionate fans had filled the roads to welcome the T20 World Champions, who clinched the trophy after defeating South Africa in Barbados. Following a spirited welcome at the airport, the Indian team members boarded an open bus and were captivated by the scene before them.
Local hero Rohit Sharma, holding the trophy, was back in his hometown. As the parade kicked off, the crowd unified in chanting his name, leaving the Indian captain visibly moved. Rohit blushed as the echoes of his name reverberated through the streets of Mumbai. Perhaps, he reflected on the journey and dedication it took to rise from the city’s streets to represent his nation on the cricket field.
It was an eventful day for the fans eagerly awaiting the return of the T20 World Cup champions after their victory against South Africa on Saturday. However, their scheduled departure was delayed due to Hurricane Beryl causing the closure of Bridgetown airport in Barbados.
A few days later, the winners boarded a special Air India flight that brought them back to New Delhi on Thursday morning. They first met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi before heading to Mumbai.
Upon landing in Mumbai, the team received a special ‘Water Salute’. As they disembarked from the plane, they walked through an aerobridge adorned with the Indian Tricolour, and all team members were greeted with a shower of flowers in the arrival corridor.
The airport pulled out all the stops for the Men in Blue, continuing with a celebratory cake-cutting ceremony at the terminal, which was decorated in the hues of the tricolour.
