The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 concluded with thrilling matches and standout performances, culminating in India’s victory over South Africa in the final held in Barbados on June 29. Following the intense final, the International Cricket Council announced its team of the tournament for the 2024 edition.
India clinched the title by defeating South Africa by seven runs in a closely contested match. Rohit Sharma joined the elite club as the second Indian captain, after MS Dhoni, to lead his team to a T20 World Cup triumph. India’s previous victory in this format was in the inaugural edition held in South Africa in 2007.
The ICC team of the tournament features six Indian players, including captain Rohit Sharma and the standout performer of the tournament, Jasprit Bumrah. Despite finishing as the tournament’s runners-up, South African players did not secure a place in the XI.
Three Afghan players earned spots in the team after their impressive journey to the semifinals. Additionally, one player each from the West Indies and Australia made the final cut. The selection panel comprised esteemed commentators Harsha Bhogle, Ian Bishop, Kass Naidoo, along with ICC General Manager of Cricket Wasim Khan.
Rohit Sharma Named Captain In Team Of The Tournament
Rohit Sharma, having led India to the T20 World Cup title, will captain the tournament’s standout XI. He finished as the second-highest run-scorer with 257 runs from eight innings. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the tournament’s leading run-getter with 281 runs, joins Rohit in the squad.
Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis are set to anchor the middle order. Pooran scored 228 runs at an average of 38, highlighted by a blazing 98 off 53 balls against Afghanistan. Stoinis contributed 169 runs at a stellar average above 40 and a striking strike rate exceeding 160. He also impressed with 10 wickets during the tournament.
Suryakumar Yadav played crucial innings against the USA, Afghanistan, and in the semi-final against England. His pivotal catch of David Miller in the final over of the World Cup final further solidified his place in the team. Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel were selected as the all-rounders for their impactful performances.
Afghanistan’s captain Rashid Khan features as a bowling all-rounder, having claimed 14 wickets in the competition. The pace attack is bolstered by Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Fazalhaq Farooqi. South African speedster Anrich Nortje, with 15 wickets to his name, is named as the 12th man of the squad.
