Due to the current political unrest and violence in Bangladesh, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering alternative venues for the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, which was originally scheduled to take place in Bangladesh in October.
The ICC initially reached out to the BCCI to host the event, but the proposal was firmly declined. The BCCI cited the monsoon season in India and their responsibility of hosting the ODI World Cup next year as reasons for the refusal.
“They (ICC) have asked us if we would conduct the World Cup. I have categorically said no. We’re in the monsoon and on top of that we will host the women’s ODI World Cup next year. I don’t want to give any kind of signals that I want to hold consecutive World Cups,” BCCI Shah told The Times of India.
According to recent reports, the UAE has emerged as the leading candidate to host the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup following India’s refusal. The region boasts three world-class stadiums in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah.
Aside from the UAE, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe are also being considered. A decision on the final venue could be announced within the week.
Earlier this month, it was reported that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is contemplating seeking the United Nations’ assistance to retain the hosting rights for the tournament. This move comes in response to travel advisories issued by several countries, including India, England, Australia, New Zealand, and Scotland, due to ongoing violence and instability in Bangladesh.
According to various media reports, more than 400 people have been killed in Bangladesh amid student-led protests.
The Women’s T20 World Cup is set to feature 10 participating countries, beginning on October 3 and concluding with the final on October 20. The tournament will involve 23 matches played across Dhaka and Sylhet.
