Fans on Twitter erupted in excitement as the Sri Lanka Women’s National Cricket Team defeated India to win the Asia Cup 2024. The match took place at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla on Sunday, July 28, where Sri Lanka triumphed by 8 wickets.

Sri Lanka’s historic victory in the Asia Cup came after a determined effort. After choosing to bat first, India got off to a strong start with an opening partnership of 44 runs between Shafali Verma (16) and Smriti Mandhana (60).

However, Sri Lanka’s bowlers made a decisive comeback, quickly dismissing key players and leaving India struggling at 87/3. Jemimah Rodrigues (29) and Smriti Mandhana then combined for 41 runs for the fourth wicket, reinvigorating the Indian innings. Despite their efforts, both batters fell in quick succession, putting India under pressure.

Richa Ghosh played a crucial role, delivering a powerful cameo of 30 runs off 14 balls, including 4 fours and 1 six, helping India reach a total of 165 runs. Kavisha Dilhari was Sri Lanka’s standout bowler, taking two wickets.

Sri Lanka’s chase began poorly with Vishmi Gunaratne run out for just 1 run. However, captain Chamari Athapaththu (61) played a superb innings, forming a key partnership with Harshitha Samarawickrama. Together, they scored 87 runs for the second wicket, putting India on the back foot.

Although Deepti Sharma removed Athapaththu in the 12th over, Samarawickrama (69) continued her impressive performance, securing a brilliant half-century. Kavisha Dilhari (30) provided strong support, allowing Sri Lanka to chase down the target in just 19 overs, winning their first-ever Asia Cup title.
