In his debut T20 World Cup appearance, Uganda’s Frank Nsubuga left an indelible mark on cricket history by delivering the most economical spell ever witnessed in the tournament. The offspinner’s exceptional performance saw him achieve extraordinary bowling figures of 2/4 from four overs as Uganda successfully dismissed PNG for 77 runs in 19.1 overs during a Group C match of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup.
Introduced into the attack during the 9th over, Nsubuga demonstrated remarkable control, conceding just two runs in his initial over. He then struck with the second delivery of his following over, dismissing Charles Amini for 5 runs. This over turned out to be a wicket-maiden, highlighting Nsubuga’s impeccable accuracy and skill.
Nsubuga continued his stellar performance with yet another wicket-maiden over, dismissing Hiri Hiri by trapping him in front for 15 runs. He then concluded his spell with another economical over, conceding just two runs, thus setting a new record.
At 43 years old, Nsubuga became the second oldest player to feature in a T20 World Cup match. He expressed immense satisfaction and pride after delivering a remarkable performance in his debut appearance on such a prestigious stage.
“My first big tournament, first world cup and to finish with figures of 2/4, I’m still pinching myself,” Nsubuga during a mid-innings chat with the broadcasters.
“You just enjoy yourself, you never know what’s coming for you. I’m looking after the young boys, they’re looking after me, so it’s been good understanding within the team that’s helping us,” he added.
The contest is being played at the Providence Stadium in Guyana and Nsubuga says the pitch isn’t easy to bat on. “The ball wasn’t coming on and I bowled on the slower side. We needed to bowl wicket-to-wicket,” he added.
Uganda, participating in their inaugural T20 World Cup, commenced their campaign against former champions Australia, enduring a defeat by 125 runs.
