Wanindu Hasaranga has decided to relinquish his role as captain of the T20I team after Sri Lanka’s premature departure from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The spinner, appointed as captain just last year, led the team in 10 matches during his tenure.
In a statement from Sri Lankan Cricket, Hasaranga explained in his resignation letter that he believes stepping down from the captaincy and continuing as a player will serve the team’s interests best.
“Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always,” Hasaranga wrote in his resignation letter to SLC.
Sri Lanka has affirmed that Hasaranga will continue to play a pivotal role in their upcoming squads. The Asian team is set to face India in a bilateral white-ball series at home starting from 26th July. They have not yet announced their squad or captain for the series.
