While Pakistan is set to host next year’s ICC Champions Trophy, uncertainty remains regarding India’s participation in the tournament. The bilateral relations between the two countries have been suspended, resulting in limited cricketing encounters between them, restricted to ICC events and the Asia Cup. India has not toured Pakistan since 2008, with the last bilateral series occurring in the 2012-13 season.
Last year, Pakistan was slated to host the Asia Cup, but due to logistical challenges, India did not travel there. Instead, the Asian Cricket Council arranged a hybrid model, relocating India’s matches to Sri Lanka.
I hope that India comes to Pakistan: Wasim Akram
Recent reports suggest a possible arrangement where India could play their Champions Trophy matches at a neutral venue, contrasting with the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) insistence on hosting the entire tournament domestically.
Amid ongoing preparations, PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi reaffirmed Pakistan’s readiness to host the event. Speculation surrounds India’s potential participation, prompting former fast-bowler Wasim Akram to express optimism about India’s visit. He emphasized Pakistan’s eagerness to host all participating teams, envisioning a warm reception for them. Akram highlighted the tournament’s significance for advancing cricket in his country.
“I hope so, that India comes to Pakistan. The whole country is looking forward to receiving all the teams,” Wasim Akram told IANS.
“They will be given a grand welcome, and the cricket will be fantastic. The facilities are excellent, and new stadiums are being built. The Chairman has started the work on new stadiums in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad.
“It will be a great tournament, and Pakistan needs this tournament for the betterment of cricket. And I hope that all teams tour because cricket and politics should be separate.
“I don’t know what the system will be, but overall everything is ready. Pakistan, the whole country is looking forward to receive all the teams and the dignitaries,” he added.
The upcoming Champions Trophy marks its return after nearly eight years, with the last edition held in England in 2017. Pakistan clinched victory in that tournament with a resounding win over India in the final.
