West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite has captured attention once again, but this time for an unexpected reason. Instead of showcasing his batting prowess, Brathwaite expressed his frustration by smashing his helmet out of the park. This dramatic display of emotion has gone viral on social media, leaving fans astonished at this new side of Brathwaite.
The incident occurred during the Max60 Caribbean 2024 Qualifier 1, where Brathwaite’s New York Strikers faced off against the Grand Cayman Jaguars in George Town. A short delivery from Joshua Little struck Brathwaite on the shoulder and was caught by the wicketkeeper, who then appealed for a caught-behind. Although the ball appeared to have not touched the bat, the umpire still gave Brathwaite out, leading to his intense reaction.
Brathwaite was stunned and infuriated by the umpire’s decision, reacting by hurling his helmet out of the park as he made his way back to the dressing room. As he approached the team’s dugout, he threw the helmet with even greater force.
Later, the New York Strikers clinched victory over the Grand Cayman Jaguars by eight runs in Qualifier 1, securing their spot in the Max60 Cayman Islands final. Opting to bat first, Mitchell Owen (22 off 10 balls) and Brandon McMullen (18 off 8) provided a solid start with a 34-run partnership in just 2.2 overs for the opening wicket. Their efforts laid the groundwork for a total of 108 for eight. Owen’s innings included four boundaries, while McMullen contributed with one four and two sixes.
In their chase, Grand Cayman Jaguars fell short by eight runs, finishing at 96 for five in their 10 overs despite Alex Hales’ unbeaten 35 off 24 balls and a quickfire 27 from skipper Raza off 16 balls. For the New York Strikers, left-arm spinner Ansh Patel was the standout performer, taking 2 for 8 in his two overs. Left-arm pacer Isuru Udana (1/32) and Mitchell Owen (1/19) each claimed a wicket. The New York Strikers are set to face the Caribbean Tigers in the final later on Sunday.
