Veteran Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami was not included in any squad for the Duleep Trophy 2024, potentially excluding him from India’s upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh.
Shami had been anticipated to return to the Indian team for the Bangladesh Tests, especially after chief selector Ajit Agarkar hinted at his comeback last month. Agarkar had mentioned that Shami’s recovery was progressing well and aimed for his availability for the Bangladesh series.
However, Shami was expected to play in the Duleep Trophy 2024, which marks the beginning of India’s domestic red-ball season. His inability to regain full fitness in time for the tournament has also led to his exclusion from the Bangladesh Tests.
Mohammed Shami’s International Comeback Delayed for This Reason
According to a PTI report, Mohammed Shami’s fitness is a major concern for the BCCI and its selection committee. It appears unlikely that Shami will be fit in time for the Duleep Trophy, and the selectors are cautious about rushing his return.
Shami has been updating fans on his recovery through social media, including bowling with a shortened run-up, which led to speculation about his participation in the Duleep Trophy starting September 5.
However, Shami is now expected to make his international return during the home Test series against New Zealand. Prior to that, he will likely play one or two Ranji Trophy matches for Bengal to prepare for red-ball cricket.
Mohammed Shami Expected to Make Comeback for New Zealand Tests
The 33-year-old right-arm fast bowler is anticipated to feature in one of the three Tests against New Zealand before heading to Australia for the demanding five-match Test series. India’s home series against New Zealand will precede their tour of Australia.
The first Test will be held in Bengaluru from October 16-20, followed by the second Test in Pune from October 24-28, and the third Test in Mumbai from November 1-5.
Reports indicate that the selectors are focused on ensuring that India’s leading pace trio—Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj—remain fit and ready for the extensive Test series against Australia.
Selectors Focused on Keeping India’s Fast Bowling Trio in Top Condition
Mohammed Shami has been a key fast bowler for India over recent years. The 33-year-old has taken 229 wickets in 64 Tests at an average of 27.71 and has achieved six five-wicket hauls throughout his Test career.
India is set to tour Australia later this year, aiming to secure a third consecutive Test series victory there. India triumphed in their previous two tours of Australia, in 2018-19 and 2020-21, winning both series by a 2-1 margin.
