Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar expressed strong criticism towards the ICC after the match between India and Canada in the ongoing T20 World Cup was called off due to an unplayable outfield at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida. Despite minimal rainfall on match day and clear conditions on Saturday, the accumulated rain from earlier in the week left the outfield unfit for play according to the umpires. This marks the third consecutive abandoned match at Lauderhill during the current T20 World Cup, following similar outcomes for Sri Lanka vs Nepal and USA vs Ireland earlier in the week.
The rain-enforced cancellations had serious ramifications: Sri Lanka was eliminated from the T20 World Cup due to the washout. Similarly, Pakistan’s hopes were dashed by the second abandoned match, allowing the USA to secure their place in the Super 8s. Sunil Gavaskar expressed his exasperation over all three matches in Florida being abandoned due to unplayable conditions. The former cricketer-turned-commentator criticized the ICC for organizing matches at venues lacking full ground covers.
“ICC should not host the matches where there are no covers to cover the entire ground. You just can’t cover the pitch and let the other parts of the ground get wet,” said Gavaskar after the India vs Canada game was abandoned.
India and USA qualify from Group A:
In Group A, India and the USA secured spots in the Super 8s, concluding their group stage with 7 and 5 points respectively. Canada exits the competition with 3 points, while Pakistan and Ireland have accumulated 2 and 1 point each. Ireland and Pakistan are scheduled to face off in their final group match.
