The Lucknow Super Giants are embarking on a new chapter as they appoint former World Cup winner and Indian pacer Zaheer Khan as their team mentor for the IPL 2025 season.
In a press conference addressing the future of the franchise, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka made the announcement, welcoming Zaheer Khan into the LSG family.
The former Indian pacer will take on the role previously held by Gautam Gambhir, who left the position to return to his former team, KKR, ahead of IPL 2024.
This will not be Zaheer Khan’s first experience in a managerial or coaching role. From 2018 to 2022, he was associated with the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise, initially as the director of cricket and later as the head of global development.
Before transitioning into these roles, Zaheer played for three IPL teams: the Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Daredevils.
Zaheer will now join LSG’s head coach Justin Langer, who is expected to continue in his role, along with assistants Lance Klusener and Adam Voges.
Another key issue for Goenka to address is KL Rahul’s future with the franchise.
According to a Cricbuzz report on August 26, Rahul, who was acquired by the Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 17 crore ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, had a meeting with LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka at the franchise’s Kolkata office.
The hour-long discussion reportedly focused on team composition for the upcoming season and the potential retention of Rahul.
Although there is no certainty that LSG will retain Rahul, the fact that he met with the owner might suggest it as a possibility.
During the press conference, Goenka was cautious about revealing details regarding KL Rahul’s future, expressing a desire to avoid fueling any speculation.
“I will make sure that the process that is required to LSG the next level is there. The next season is going to be a special one,” stated an ecstatic Zaheer at the press conference in Kokata, as per RevSportz.
