Basit Ali has voiced his opinion regarding Gautam Gambhir stepping into the role of India’s head coach following Rahul Dravid’s departure. The announcement of Gambhir’s appointment was made by BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday, July 9.
Prior to this official confirmation, reports had already hinted at Gambhir’s discussions with the BCCI during the IPL 2024 season, where he served as the mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders. Initially contemplating the offer, Gambhir eventually accepted the position, succeeding Rahul Dravid, who had earlier expressed his desire to step down after the T20 World Cup 2024.
Gautam Gambhir will find it hard as India coach: Basit Ali
Basit Ali, in a recent commentary on his YouTube channel, remarked that Rahul Dravid had a paternal presence in Team India, making it a daunting task for Gautam Gambhir to command similar respect and authority among the players.
Highlighting Gambhir’s aggressive demeanor, Basit noted the former opener’s tendency towards intensity. Despite Gambhir’s successful stint with Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, Basit predicted challenges for him in his new role as India’s coach.
Looking ahead, Basit speculated that Gambhir might face relatively easier assignments against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh initially. However, he emphasized that the real test awaits during India’s upcoming tour of Australia, especially in the anticipated five-match Test series later this year.
Basit Ali comments on Gautam Gambhir’s relationship with Virat Kohli.
Basit Ali, the former Pakistan cricketer, also weighed in on the dynamic between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli. According to Basit, their relationship is unlikely to impact their on-field performances as both are deeply committed to representing their country. He illustrated his point with the example of Hardik Pandya, who faced criticism during IPL 2024 but received immense support during India’s victorious campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Ali highlighted the significant challenges Gautam Gambhir will encounter during his tenure as India’s head coach. He emphasized that Gambhir’s leadership will be tested in how he rallies the team after defeats against formidable opponents. Basit Ali also commended Gambhir for his philanthropic efforts in India and extended his best wishes for Gambhir’s new role.
Prior to Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid served as India’s coach and enjoyed a successful tenure. Under Dravid’s guidance, India reached three ICC tournament finals in a year. Despite initial losses in the WTC final and the ODI World Cup final in 2023, India clinched the T20 World Cup 2024, marking a memorable farewell for Dravid.
Contrasting with Rahul Dravid’s composed demeanor, Gautam Gambhir is known for his assertive and determined approach, traits he exhibited during his playing career. His experience in leading India to victory in crucial finals adds a valuable dimension to his coaching. These attributes are expected to be pivotal for the Indian cricket team moving forward.
